Howdy, all.
Yep. It's just me, trying to figure out a little bit of what's going on. My life has been upside down for a bit, between dealing with cancer and the follow-up surgery and doctor visits, the holidays as celebrated in the U.S., and now, the latest. Yes, our elderly, much-beloved rescue Great Dane, Thalia, is dying.
She is around eight years old. She is a brindle, patient with our cat, ruler of the dog pack (all two of them!), and a very good dog. She has been nothing but gentle with people and does her best to put everyone at ease. She has always been the best of dogs and is a true Great Great Dane.
She is currently asleep in her crate/kennel. Her kidneys seem to be shutting down; she is in no pain and is unable to walk. She stopped eating last week and has just about stopped drinking. She still enjoys being petted and talked to, though she is getting to be too weak to respond much. At 145 pounds, she's a little too big for one person to carry, and two people trying to lift her seems to hurt her. So, we leave her to her business and she lets us know what she needs/wants from us.
I've been keeping her clean and dry - she no longer minds the gentle spongebaths that she gets - and change her bedding as she soils it. She is in the family room where we 'live' most of the time, so she is in the mddle of everything we are doing, she is surrounded by her family and regularly reminded of how much we love her.
I'm really going to miss my big lap puppy. There will never be another dog like her, with her sense of humor or her desire to be in the middle of the rest of the people group. She managed to change the way I think about some things, and would often keep me company during my 'dark' days. She wasn't afraid to play or act foolish, and often stopped to laugh at herself and us.
Please give your (fill in the blank) a big hug and think of us.
Best thoughts,
GoldenGryphon
The bad thing about dogs is that they live for such a short time. The good thing about dogs is that you can share your life with so many different ones.
